As with many dog breeds, the true origin of the Shar-Pei is shrouded in mystery. Many believe that the dogs are an ancient breed, citing figurines from the Han Dynasty dating back to BCE, which bear a striking resemblance to the wrinkled pooches we know today. Others counter that the figurines could just as easily be pugs or chow chows and mention that Marco Polo made no mention of them while traveling in China he did write about the chow chow.
The dog's original purpose is also a bit of a head-scratcher. Some suggest the breed was developed by royalty as guard dogs. Others say that peasants bred the dogs to hunt, herd, protect stock, and guard the home.
A third group believes Shar-Pei were bred to fight; they were, in fact, used with some frequency in the pits until better fighting dogs, like mastiffs, were introduced. As the dogs were edged out of the fighting pits, breeding slowed and the Shar-Pei population dwindled. The breed took another hit when China became a communist country.

The breed originated in China — the name Shar-Pei literally translates to "sand skin.
The Shar-Pei coat is short and coarse, falling in heavy folds around the dog's head, neck and shoulders. In addition to their prominent muzzle, Shar-Pei have small, deep-set eyes and tiny ears. Their tongues are blue-black. But it's the wrinkles that make Shar-Pei so memorable. In an email interview, Dr.
In hyper-layman's terms, hyaluronan is a sort of "gel" around the cells in the skin. Among other things, it aids in hydration and elasticity of the skin. In a Shar-Pei, the HAS2 gene goes into overdrive creating way too much hyaluronan and that causes the trademark wrinkles, which are especially visible in Shar-Pei puppies. By the time a Shar-Pei is full grown, its wrinkles have settled down and are typically just in the face, head and neck.
The genetics of the Shar-Pei's wrinkles helped Lindblad-Toh and other researchers uncover a mystery when they used the breed as subjects in a study connecting Shar-Pei to a fairly common canine illness.
Symptoms include episodes of fever that appear to rise out of nowhere, and overall listlessness. They said that it was an unnecessary waste of money and food. As a result, this precious breed was on the verge of extinction. They would have deprived us of enjoying their beauty. They are very independent and they are a dog for a single owner. They even have their own, cat-like way to play. This breed likes to trap things by pawing them. Their independent personality makes them indifferent to other people.
And they are a little stubborn when it comes time to obeying and following directions.
