As part of the investigation, Syracuse used metadata analysis and found potential issues related to creating, editing and transmitting the assignments. The analysis found that "the 'Author' and 'Last edited by author' field was attributed to someone other than the student-athlete," the NCAA wrote. Kevin Wall, the director of athlete support services, discovered "troubling" emails in spring from a player and a support services mentor, including emails with attached coursework.
However, Wall did not report his concerns to the provost or compliance office. Why did Wall not report concerns? He told the NCAA in that he feared he would not be taken seriously. Wall circulated a department memo in August to all coaches outlining athlete support services rules, including that athletes should not share their email passwords.
Kissel and athlete support services staff continued to access players' email accounts. In January , Syracuse was the No. The problem: After the first semester ended, star 7-foot center Fab Melo had failed to make enough progress to remain eligible.
That this occurred at a time when the NCAA was investigating Syracuse for other potential violations from didn't stop the university from thinking creatively to make Melo eligible. The waiver included a signed personal statement from Melo explaining these difficulties, although it's unclear "who ultimately authored the personal statement," the NCAA wrote. So on Jan. Syracuse's faculty athletic representative, associate provost, athletics director Daryl Gross, both deputy athletic directors, the compliance director, Wall and Kissel all attended.
The group discussed three options: classify a course as "nonattendance"; pursue an incomplete; or execute a grade change. The associate provost "made clear that grade changes can only be initiated by students," the NCAA wrote.
One day later, a professor met with Melo and agreed he could submit extra work to raise his C-minus grade he received the previous year. In an effort to be proactive, Syracuse self-imposed a postseason ban on the men's basketball team for this season in February. Melo also missed three Big East games during the season because of an academic issue.
Early in the season, former forward James Southerland sat out six games for an academic issue but helped lead the Orange to the Final Four. In March , school officials said the university had self-reported possible violations of its internal drug policy by former members of the team and that the NCAA was investigating.
