By , South Gate boasted more than 35 factories manufacturing chemicals, furniture, roofing, machinery, and other products. This industrial saturation meant South Gate was a hive of activity during World War II, filled to the brim with war workers keeping machinery humming from early in the morning until late at night, if not twenty-four hours a day.
When the war ended, many workers who had moved to South Gate to keep the factories running decided to remain. In , South Gate organized a Chamber of Congress which began promoting the community, luring still more industrial operations to the area. In , over industries were operating in South Gate. Tweedy, has played an important part in South Gate's history. Tweedy was born in in Illinois, and came to California by ox-drawn cart in Tweedy rode across the prairies perched on her rocking chair in the ox cart. The family was large, and several generations have lived in this city.
The family members bought some 2, acres of the land on which much of South Gate was built. The "downtown business district" in South Gate was named after the family and is known as the Tweedy Mile. South Gate Gardens As far as the eye could see, Rancho San Antonio was covered with thousands of head of grazing cattle, sheep and horses, large fertile fruit orchards and fields of cauliflower, beets, barley, beans, as well as dairy farms with rich butter and cheese.
